Periodontal Treatment

Periodontal disease is caused by ignoring the early warning signs of gingivitis (gum disease). This common disease affects the bone around the teeth but can be easily prevented. Obvious signs of gingivitis are bleeding gums, swelling of the gums, and bad breath. The gums may actually pull away from the teeth and expose the sensitive root area. If the disease has not progressed too far, then it can be remedied by cleaning the area around the teeth below the gum line. This removes the inflamed tissue and plaque, getting rid of the bacteria that is irritating the gum tissue and allowing it to reattach to your teeth.

Benefits:

Preventing tooth loss is the biggest benefit. If nothing is done to combat this disease, it could become so bad that all the teeth could fall out or have to be extracted. Obviously, losing teeth will change the way you look, feel and chew. An expensive procedure that could involve implants or dentures might be necessary. Why not practice prevention instead?

who is it for:

If your gums are inflamed or bleed easily, see your dentist immediately. If it has progressed far enough that your gums are eroding and the root is being exposed, there is no time to waste. Soreness and halitosis can also be signs of infection and you should be treated as soon as possible. Loose teeth could mean that advanced bone loss has occurred and this can be caused by pockets of bacteria that have occurred under your gums. All of these conditions are not to be taken lightly.

types:

When the normal procedures are not curing the problem, a Gingivectomy may be needed. This is a surgery that will remove the affected gum tissue. Local anesthesia will be used to keep you comfortable during the procedure, and the wound will be dressed afterward to help it heal.

If left untreated, you may also need a Gingivoplasty to take away the tissue. It will be lifted off the teeth to allow the removal of inflamed areas and bacteria. After this, the dentist can reconstruct bone and gum where necessary. You may need to take antibiotics to prevent further infection.

recommendations:

See your dentist every six months, or at more frequent intervals if that is indicated for you. Don’t forget to brush and floss your teeth in the morning, after eating, and at night too. Cleanings should be done on a regular basis. But the most important recommendation we can give is never delaying periodontal treatment if you have been told that you need it. Why wait, when you may lose some or all of your teeth? It is just not worth it.
